© Euro-Fuchsia (2011) Cultivars The number of fuchsia hybrids, which are blooming in gardens, nurseries or feral in some areas of Ireland, Madeira or New Zealand may exceed the figure of 15.000. Naming of new hybrids therefor is a problem, many names are in use, some of them for more than one cultivar. Registration The best way to safe the uniqueness of a name is to register. Official registrar for fuchsias is the American Fuchsia Society, which has - beginning in the 1950s - up till now noted more than 7000 cultivars. But, the AFS registration is a very exact registration, which requires the use of a RHS colour chart, and it is a mere paper registration without any fotografic device or possibility to use electronical means for uploading or evaluation of the data. The British Fuchsia Society offered in 2006 an up-to-date registration which mainly uses fotografic devices and will in future offer electronic uploads and electronic evaluation. Negotiations between Euro-Fuchsia and the BFS opened the BFS registration 2007 into a Euro-Fuchsia registration, which has meanwhile successfully started. Therefor Euro-Fuchsia recommends to registrate new hybrids in the way explained at the BFS pages http://www.thebfs.org.uk/seedling2.asp Fuchsia Inventar List In order to avoid double namings it is before registration recommended to check whether the intended name is already in use or has been in use. Possibilities are given by the AFS Bulletins, the so called "Cultivar Inventaris" by the Dutch Circle of Fuchsia Friends (NKvF), the inventar lists of Yannick Baccon or the DDFGG fuchsia inventar list, which is an easy to handle internet tool. Don't worry, that the page is in German, but the language of fuchsias is international. Euro-Fuchsia apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the incompleteness of all existing databases. Those, who care for data bases are dependent on cataloques, publications about fuchsias, and informations by fuchsia friends, as well as fuchsia breeders. They are only following the development of fuchsia breeding. Therefor Euro-Fuchsia is not able to garantiee, that the databases are complete at any point of time.
